Dental Hygiene

Dental hygiene is fundamental to good oral health. The most important dental hygiene occurs on a daily basis at home.  We recommend healthy mouths be cleaned by a dental professional at least two times per year.  These cleanings are to prevent the development of cavities and/ or periodontal disease.  Some people have general or health conditions that require more frequent preventive cleanings.

People with more significant problems with their oral health such as periodontal disease (disease of the gums and bone that surrounds the teeth) can require additional dental hygiene treatments including full mouth debridement, scaling and root planing (sometimes called "deep cleanings"), and periodontal maintenance. In the case of mild or moderate periodontal disease, these procedures are provided in our office by our highly skilled registered dental hygienists.  Advanced periodontal disease with severe bone loss may require dental extractions or referrals to a periodontist.

New patients will be assessed for their periodontal health at their initial visit.  All existing patients will have their periodontal health reassessed at all recall visits.  Any dental hygiene concerns will be discussed at your visit and patients will always be informed of their periodontal status or changes.
